Abstract

Oily condensation products are obtained by treating the crude reaction products obtained by condensing chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weght with aromatic hydrocarbons by the aid of AlCl3 or Al, with a hydroxide or an anhydrous sulphate or phosphate of Fe, Cr, or Al at above 200 DEG C. (preferably between 250 and 300 DEG C.) and separating the oily constituents, e.g. by decantation or filtration. The crude reaction products of the first condensation may be allowed to separate into two layers, of which one or both may be subjected to the hydroxide or sulphate treatment. The amount of inorganic hydroxide or sulphate added is 1 or 2 mols. per mol. of the condensing agent in the product undergoing condensation. In an example, 650 parts of chlorinated paraffin wax containing 22 per cent of Cl are treated with 1050 parts of benzene in the presence of 50 parts of anhydrous AlCl3 and the whole heated to 75 DEG C. for 3 hours. The reaction mass separates into two layers, the lower of which is heated with 40 parts of anhydrous FeSO4 for half an hour at 300 DEG C. The benzene distils off and the AlCl3 and FeSO4 form a granular solid mass. This mass is removed by filtration after cooling, giving a red-green fluorescent oil of viscosity 200 centistokes at 100 DEG F. Specification 473,334 is referred to.
