Abstract

In the manufacture of products useful as lubricants by chlorinating an aliphatic hydrocarbon having a molecular weight above 200 and condensing the chlorinated hydrocarbon with an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of aluminium chloride, the reaction product is allowed to separate into two layers, and the lower layer or a part thereof is used as the condensing agent in the process, with or without addition of fresh aluminium chloride. The chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon may be chlorinated paraffin wax containing not more than 40 per cent, preferably 15--30 per cent, of chlorine; chlorinated gas oil or shale oil may also be used. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene or toluene, and may be present in excess. The process may be effected in batches or continuously. In the latter case, the reagents and the condensing agent are fed to a heated reaction vessel through which the mixture passes to a separating device, the lower layer from the separator being returned to the reaction vessel. Examples of batch processes conducted as described above are given. Specifications 259,507, [Class 2 (iii)], and 447,778 are referred to.ALSO:In the manufacture of products useful as lubricants by chlorinating an aliphatic hydrocarbon having a molecular weight above 200 and condensing the chlorinated hydrocarbon with an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of aluminium chloride, the reaction product is allowed to separate into two layers, and the lower layer or a part thereof is used as the condensing agent in the process, with or without addition of fresh aluminium chloride. The reaction may be effected at a raised temperature, and the upper layer may be worked up by washing it with dilute hydrochloric acid, drying, and distilling off any excess of aromatic hydrocarbon; further refining treatment, e.g. dewaxing or molecular distillation, may follow. The lower layer is used again as described above, but a portion may be removed at intervals and replaced by fresh aluminium chloride; the removed portion may be treated similarly to the upper layer. The process may be effected in batches or continuously. In the latter case, the reagents and the condensing agent are fed to a heated reaction vessel through which the mixture passes to a separating device, the lower layer from the separator being returned to the reaction vessel. Examples of batch processes conducted as described above are given. Specifications 259,507, [Class 2 (iii)], and 447,778 are referred to.
