570,952. Rust-preventing oils and compositions. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15930. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1941. [Classes 91 and 95] A rust-preventing and rust-removing gasoline, fuel oil, lubricant, flushing oil, or albino asphalt comprises any of these hydrocarbons together with small amounts each of a hydroxy carboxylic or polycarboxylic acid having at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule and a mutual solvent for hydrocarbons and water. Among dicarboxylic acids recommended are alkyated succinic acids produced by reacting olefines from the cracking of paraffin wax or the dehydration of long chain fatty alcohols with maleic anhydride and hydrogenating the alkylene succinic anhydride produced, as described in Specification 488,597. Among solvents mentioned are ethers, alcohols, and ketones, including mono, di- and tri-glycols and their ethers such as diethylene glycol mono butyl ether. From 0.001 to 10 per cent, of the polycarboxylic acid and from 0.1 to 20 per cent. of the solvent may be used. A small amount of water appears to be necessary for the formation of a protective film on the metal surface: this may be absorbed from the air or surroundings in some cases by the mutual solvent, otherwise small amounts of water, e.g., from 0.05 to 1 per cent. may be added.
