Abstract

Consistent grease is made by blending mineral oil and an anhydrous lime soap in the usual manner, and incorporating a small proportion, e.g. 1--5 per cent of an organic solvent of B.P. above 65 DEG C., which is completely miscible with the oil. 0,5--1,5 per cent of water, and triethanolamine soaps or alkali metal soaps may subsequently be incorporated. Solvents specified are triethanolamine, diethylene glycol, mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol, monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol, the acetates, formates, or other esters of such ethers, ethylene dichloride, and mixtures thereof. The lime soaps may be prepared from tallow, stearic or oleic acid, lard, degras, fish oil, or resin oil. 5--25 lb. of soap to 95--75 lb. of mineral oil of 100--150 sec. Saybolt at 100 DEG F. is suitable. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2382/12, [Class 91], and 402,262.
