Abstract

Beeswax is freed from oil by heating the wax with an alkali solution, neutralizing the resulting mixture and separating the de-oiled wax therefrom. Example, beeswax is melted in a boiler with water and a small amount of caustic soda or potash is added with stirring for a short period which is insufficient to saponify the wax. The mixture is neutralized with hydrochloric acid and cold water added. After standing, water and emulsified oil is drawn off at the bottom of the boiler, and the purified beeswax is removed and dried. The wax may be used in the manufacture of waterproofing compositions, lubricants, paints, polishes or leather-dressing compositions. Examples: (1) A coating-composition for wood, canvas, iron, or rubber is made by melting the purified beeswax and carnauba wax with linseed oil, and adding turpentine or gasoline; (2) a waterproofing composition for wood or canvas consists of the de-oiled beeswax mixed with a solution of shellac in alcohol; (3) de-oiled beeswax is added to lubricating oil to form an oil or grease; (4) polishing-compositions consist of the beeswax, carnauba wax, turpentine and gasoline; (5) a leather-dressing composition consists of de-oiled beeswax, castor oil and neats-foot oil.
