Abstract
Highly viscous oils are produced by blowing or otherwise oxidizing fatty oil or fatty acid and heating the product for several hours to about 200 DEG C. Fatty oils specified are rape seed oil, cotton seed oil, train oil, polymerized train oils, and esters of poly-oxyfatty acids, e.g. the glyceride of triricinoleic acid. The heating may be in vacuo, in carbon dioxide, or in air. In an example, 1000 kilograms of triricinoleic acid produced according to Specification 112,624 are treated at 120 DEG C. with a current of air until the viscosity reaches 50 DEG Engler at 100 DEG C. The air is cut off, and the temperature is raised to 200 DEG C. for 15 hours. The viscous oils are soluble in mineral oils, are much less acid than the fatty acid, and are suitable for greasing leather, for making artificial leather, emulsions, ointments and the like, for softening textile fibres, for impregnating, for varnishes, lacquers, and dressings, and for use in dyeing and printing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) gives examples of the treatment of blown rape-seed oil and of polymerized seal train oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
