Abstract

107,383. Scholz, V. Nov. 5, 1915, [Convention date]. Pigments; varnishes.-Waste oil-cloth, artificial leather, linoleum, &c. are resolved into their constituents by treatment with alkalies or with organic solvents. The products are separated by settling, filtering, distilling, &c., and may in part be used for the manufacture of lineoleum &c. The materials thus recovered comprise (1) fibrous materials or rags suitable for use as " cleaning waste "; (2) binding-agents, e.g. (a) oily and resinous materials, such as varnish and oils, recovered either as such or as soaps from which the oils may be obtained by treatment with acid, and capable of use as lubricants, dressing and spinning oils, or in the varnish and soap industries, or (b), in the case of artificial leather, celluloid or cellulose esters; (3) filling and colouring materials, e.g. cork powder, China clay, chalk, soot, zinc white, and lithopone, suitable for re-use, or in some cases adapted to be treated for the recovery of zinc. The alkalies used are soda or caustic soda or potash in 10-20 per cent. solution. The solvents used are naphtha, benzine, toluene, benzol, xylol, carbon tetrachloride, chlorethanes, chloracetylenes, carbon disulphide, petroleum, turpentine, &c., or in the case of artificial leather, acetone, alcohol, and acetic ether. The treatment with solvent is effected in a digester under a pressure of 2-10 atmospheres.
