Abstract

Lubricating-compositions especially for use under high pressures comprise a lubricating oil and a halogenated aliphatic or carbocyclic compound free from oxygen, having a vapour pressure less than atmospheric pressure at 170 DEG C., and containing at least 55 per cent of halogen and added in an amount less than 20 per cent of the total composition. The following compounds are excluded; halogenated hydro-aromatic and cycloaliphatic compounds, polyhalogenated benzenes or homologues of benzene, and halogenated non-volatile petroleum products such as halogenated lubricating oil, kerosene, and paraffin wax. Halogenated aryl compounds are preferred for example, chlorinated aniline, toluidine; diphenyl, phenylaniline; naphthalene and homologues thereof; naphthylamine; phenanthrene, anthracene or homologues of these; chrysene and picene. These compounds may be added as such or dissolved in a solvent such as benzene, chlorbenzene, amyl alcohol, acetone, petroleum naphtha, carbon tetrachloride, aniline, trichlorethylene or tri-cresyl phosphate.
