Abstract

A detergent composition comprises a soap and/or a synthetic organic detergent together with cyclohexyl carbinol or a substitution derivative thereof having one or more alkyl groups attached to the naphthene ring. The ratio of soap and/or synthetic organic detergent to the cyclohexyl carbinol or derivative thereof may be in the range 0.5 : 1 to 2 : 1. The soap is preferably potassium oleate but alkali metal salts of stearic, palmitic and lauric acids may be used. Suitable synthetic organic detergents include alkyl aryl sulphonates and primary and secondary alkyl sulphates. The compositions may contain sodium carbonate. In an example woollen material is washed with an aqueous solution containing 2 per cent. sodium carbonate and 2 per cent. of a detergent composition comprising 61 parts of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, 103 parts of cyclohexyl carbinol and 31 parts of water, all parts being by weight.
