Abstract

A free-flowing detergent powder is obtained by heating a mixture of a detergent which is a liquid or a waxy solid at normal temperatures, with at least its own weight of an alkali metal bicarbonate under conditions such that at least 35 per cent. of the bicarbonate is converted into carbonate. The mixture is preferably heated at 60-160 DEG C. The proportion of detergent in the mixture may vary between 5 and 30 per cent. by weight; above about 35 per cent., however, a somewhat sticky product is obtained which is useful on account of the high detergent content. The preferred detergents are the condensation products of alkylated phenols with from 5 to 20 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, the alkyl substituents preferably containing in all between 6 and 20 carbon atoms. These condensation products are described in p Specification 470,181. Other detergents specified are the condensation products of ethylene oxide with fatty alcohols, e.g. cetyl alcohol, sperm oil alcohol, and dodecyl alcohol, with fatty acids such as stearic, oleic, and lauric acids and acid mixtures derived from coconut oil, or with fatty acid amides; the methyl taurine derivative of oleic acid; secondary alkyl sulphates; quaternary ammonium compounds such as the alkyl pyridinium chlorides; sulphonated petroleum derivates such as mahogany sulphates; and sulphonated esters, e.g. sulphonated oleic esters or sulphonated castor oil. The alkali metal of the bicarbonate is normally sodium, and sodium sesquicarbonate or mixtures of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate are included. Other substances may be incorporated in the mixtures either before or after heating. These include inorganic salts such as carbonates, sulphates, phosphates, borates and silicates; acid salts, lime, clays, pumice powder, montmorillonites, starches, dextrines, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and fluorescent whitening agents or optical bleaching agents. In an example, 10 parts by weight of the condensation product of p-iso-octyl-phenol with 8 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide are mixed with 90 parts of sodium bicarbonate and the sticky mixture is heated for 68 hours at 70 DEG C. Many other examples are given.
