Abstract
A wetting agent having germicidal detergent properties comprises a mixture of an organic anionic detergent, an organic cationic germicide and a water-soluble non-ionic surface active agent containing a polyglycol ether group, said anionic detergent and said cationic germicide being present in relative proportions by weight of 1 : 4 to 12 : 1 and said non-ionic surface active agent being present in an amount equal to at least 10 per cent of the combined weight of said anionic and cationic agents. Specified anionic detergents are alkali metal soaps of higher fatty acids of vegetable and animal origin, e.g. hydrogenated cotton-seed oil stearic, lauric and palmitic acids or mixtures thereof, alkali metal soaps of alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, e.g. sodium cetyl sulphate, sodium hexadecanesulphonate and sodium di-isobutyl-naphthalene-1-sulphonate. Specified cationic germicides are quaternary ammonium compounds, pyridinium compounds, e.g. 8-hydroxy-quinolinium sulphate, cetyl pyridinium chloride, octyl-phenoxy ethoxy ethyl (benzyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride, alkyl (8 to 18 carbon atoms) dimethyl-3.4-dichlorobenzyl ammonium chloride and alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The non-ionic surface active agents have the general formula <FORM:0641297/IV (c)/1> in which A=residue of a monomeric organic compound containing an active hydrogen (i.e. alcohols, phenols, amides, primary and secondary amines and carboxylic acids) and R1 and R2=hydrogen or alkyl and n=integer greater than three. Such materials are described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,970,578 and 2,213,477, and include polyalkylene oxide derivatives (e.g. polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide and polybutylene oxide) of (a) higher fatty acid such as lauric, oleic, palmitic, stearic and mixtures thereof of animal, vegetable or mineral origin, (b) water insoluble organic hydroxy compounds, e.g. fatty acid alcohols, phenols especially alkyl phenols containing at least six alkyl carbon atoms such as iso-octyl, di-tertiary butyl, tri-isopropyl, nonyl-do-decyl phenols or naphthols, (c) aromatic alcohols such as benzyl and cinnamyl alcohol, (d) water-soluble partial vegetable fatty acid esters of anhydro-sorbitol, e.g. sorbitan monolaurate, sorbitan monostearate and sorbitan monooleate, (e) stearyl, lauryl, dicyclohexyl and dibutyl amines. In addition there may be added inorganic alkali metal salts, e.g. sodium or potassium phosphates, carbonates, borates and silicates and mutual solvents for the water and the surface active agents, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. Specification 505,429, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:A germicidal detergent composition comprises a mixture of an organic anionic detergent, an organic cationic germicide and a water-soluble non-ionic surface active agent containing a polyglycol ether group, said anionic detergent and said cationic germicide being present in relative proportions by weight of 1 : 4 to 12 : 1 and said non-ionic surface active agent being present in an amount equal to at least 10 per cent of the combined weight of said anionic and cationic agents.
