Abstract
Antimicrobic detergent compositions comprise a detergent substance and as active ingredient, a halogen-o-hydroxy-diphenyl ether of formula <FORM:1024022/C4-C5/1> where p is 1 to 5, Hal represents a halogen atom, and where p is greater than 1 such halogen atoms may be the same or different, corresponding compounds in which one or both of the benzene rings A and B further contain substituents selected from C1-C4 alkyl or halogenated alkyl groups, C1-C4 alkoxy groups, cyano, allyl, amino and acetyl groups, and corresponding compounds in which the indicated hydroxy group is acylated. Detergent substances specified are anionic active compounds, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, water-soluble salts of dodecyl alcohol sulphate or of dodecyl alcohol polyglycol ether sulphate and C12-C24 soaps; non-ionic substances, e.g. polyglycol ethers of C12-C24 fatty alcohols, and polyglycol ethers of C5-C20 alkylated phenols; and ampholenic substances, e.g. the reaction products of alkali metal salts of halogen fatty acids and polyalkylene polyamines. The compositions may also contain other antimicrobial agents (examples given), water-soluble perborates, polyphosphates, carbonates, silicates, optical brightening agents, plasticizers, salts having an acid reaction, e.g. ammonium or zinc silico flouride, oxalic acids and dressing agents, e.g. those having a basis of synthetic resin or starch. Examples describe washing liquors and soap tablets, in the former of which ethylene glycol monomethylether is used as a solvent for the antimicrobral agent.ALSO:An antimicrobiol polyamide composition comprises polyamide 6- and 4,41-dichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether. An antimicrobial polyvinyl chloride composition comprises polyvinyl chloride powder, dibutyl sebacate, dibutyl tin dilaurate and 4,41 - dichloro - 2 - hydroxydiphenyl ether as antimicrobial agent.ALSO:The Specification lists a number of specific compounds, prepared by known methods, within the formula <FORM:1024022/C2/1> where p is to 5, Hal represents a halogen atom and, where p is greater than 1 such halogen atoms may be the same or different, corresponding compounds in which one or both of the benzene rings A and B further contain substituents selected from C1-C4 alkyl and halogenated alkyl groups, C1-C4 alkoxy groups, cyano, allyl, amino and acetyl groups, and corresponding compounds in which the indicated hydroxy group is acylated.ALSO:A process for protecting organic materials against contamination by micro-organisms comprises incorporating in such materials a halogen-o-hydroxydiphenyl ether of formula: <FORM:1024022/A5-A6/1> where p is 1 to 5, Hal represent a halogen atom and, where p is greater than 1, such halogen atoms may be the same or different, corresponding compounds in which one or both of the benzene rings A and B further contain substituents selected from C1-C4 alkyl or halogenated alkyl groups, C1-C4 alkoxy groups, cyano, allyl, amino and acetyl groups, and corresponding compounds to any of these in which the indicated hydroxy group is acylated. Acylated compounds may be esters of acetic acid, chloroacetic acid, methyl or dimethyl carbamic aicd, benzoic acid, chlorobenzoic acid, methyl sulphonic acid or chloromethyl sulphonic acid. The diphenyl ethers may be applied to said organic materials in the form of compositions, e.g. dissolved in solutions of wetting or cleansing agents, in paints or lacquers, in plasticisers or in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. They can also be applied in combination with other antimicrobially active substances e.g. with halogenated salicyclic acid alkyl amides and anilides, halogenated diphenyl ureas, halogenated benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones, polychloro-hydroxydiphenyl methanes, halogenated dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphides, 2-mino-unidazolidines or -tetrahydropyrimidines and tetra methyl thiuram disulphide. The process of the invention can be applied, for example, in the treatment of paper, wood and other cellulosic materials, leather, cotton, and wool. The diphenyl ethers may also be incorporated in cosmetic articles, e.g. soaps, ointments or powders to render them antimicrobial.
