Abstract

Ethylene is condensed in the presence of a mixture of low-boiling liquid hydrocarbons rich in naphthenes, yielding a product suitable for use as motor spirit. The condensation is effected at increased temperature and pressure, preferably in presence of a catalytic heavy metal oxide such as molybdenum oxide. In an example the liquid hydrocarbons are obtained by the vapour phase hydrogenation of middle oils produced in the liquid phase hydrogenation of coal. Any high-boiling constituents formed in the condensation process are recirculated to the vapour phase hydrogenation.
