Abstract

A lubricating oil base stock obtained by distillation is subjected to hydrogenation in the presence of a sulphur-resistant hydrogenation catalyst at at least 325 DEG C., preferably in the range 400-475 DEG C., and redistilling the hydrogenated product under a vacuum greater than that of the original distillation so that heavy fractions having a higher viscosity index than the feedstock are separated. The redistillation pressure is preferably not greater than 100 mm. Hg, and is preferably less than 1/10 of the initial distillation pressure. The base stock may be dewaxed either before or after hydrogenation. The catalyst preferably comprises 0.1-10% wt. cobalt oxide and 5-25% wt. molybdenum oxide supported on alumina, with if desired 5-25% wt. iron oxide.
