Abstract
A process for increasing the viscosity of unsaturated oils consists in separately hydrogenating the oil and then subjecting the hydrogenated oil to voltolization. Natural unsaturated ester oils having a chain of more than 8 C atoms and an I value of above 110 are preferred. The hydrogenation process prevents the formation of insoluble jelly-like products during voltolization. The hydrogenation may be carried out at temperatures of 200-450 DEG F. in the presence of an Ni catalyst, at atmospheric or raised pressure. In an example, menhaden oil of 180 I value is hydrogenated in the presence of a Ni catalyst till the I value is reduced to 100. The hydrogenated oil is voltolized in a trommel-type voltolizer at 4-6 cm. of mercury absolute and an electric potential of 4,000 volts at a frequency of 10,000 cycles per second. When an oil of viscosity of about 600" Saybolt at 210 DEG F. is produced, a petroleum lubricating oil of viscosity of about 70" Saybolt at 210 DEG F. is added and the mixture further voltolized till a final product having a viscosity of 1000" Saybolt at 210 DEG F. is produced, free from any jelly-like products insoluble in water. The products may be used alone as lubricants or added to lubricating oils, greases, soaps &c., as oxidation inhibitors or pour point depressants.
