Abstract

Acrolein dimer (2,3-dihydro-pyran-2-carboxaldehyde) is prepared by heating acrolein in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor such as hydroquinone.ALSO:A grease composition comprises a lubricating oil, a metal soap of a C12 to C22 fatty acid and the reaction product of a metallic hydroxide with acrolein, acrolein dimer (2, 3-dihydropyran - 2 - carboxaldehyde) or mixtures thereof. Fatty acids referred to are hydrogenated fish oil acids, stearic acid, oleic acid, hydroxy stearic acid and fatty acids from beef fat and tallow. The metallic hydroxide used to form the soap and the reaction product may be sodium, lithium, calcium, strontium or barium. Lubricating oils specified are mineral oils and synthetic oils such as synthetic esters for example di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate and adipic acid esters, polymerized cracked wax, alkylated aromatics and polyglycol ethers and esters. Phenyl alpha naphthylamine may be added to the composition. The preparation of the grease is described.
