Abstract

Lubricating oils suitable for refrigerators are produced by extracting a straight-run mineral oil fraction, boiling in the lubricating oil boiling range, with an aromatics-selective solvent to obtain a raffinate containing less than 8 % wt. polyaromatics, catalytically hydrodesulphurizing the raffinate under mild conditions, i.e. such that whilst sulphur and oxygen compounds are hydrogenated the hydrocarbons remain substantially unaffected, and thereafter contacting the hydrodesulphurized raffinate with a solid adsorbent, for example, fuller's earth, activated clay, or activated alumina. Desirably, at some stage prior to the adsorbent treatment, the oil is dewaxed. Low-boiling constituents of the hydrodesulphurized raffinate may be removed by distillation or by stripping with steam. The hydrodesulphurization may be effected at 290-375 DEG C., 30-105 ats. g., L.H.S.V. 1-4, and 45-215 Nm3 H2 per m3 raffinate. The extraction is preferably effected at 25-100 DEG C., for example with phenol, sulphur dioxide, or furfural. On oxidation, inhibitor preferably of the phenolic type such as 2,6-ditertiarybutyl-4-methyl phenol, may be added to the finished product. Specification 657,521 is referred to.
