Abstract

1311400 Lubricating oils TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 58561/71 Heading C5E Lubricating oils are made from a vacuum distillate of a paraffin base crude oil by solvent refining to form a first raffinate which is dewaxed and then subjected to a second solvent extraction to form a second raffinate of higher viscosity index and a second extract of lower viscosity index. A vacuum distillate 1 is extracted with furfural or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at 2 and the raffinate 5 is dewaxed at 12, e.g. using a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene as the dewaxing solvent, to produce a dewaxed oil 14 having a pour point of -20 to + 20‹ F. and a viscosity index of 85 to 100. The dewaxed oil can be treated at 17 by mild hydrogenation, clay contacting or acid treating. At least a portion of the finished oil 18 is extracted with N-methyl-2 pyrrolidone at 20 to form a raffinate oil 27 having a viscosity index above 100 and a pour point of - 10 to 20‹ F. and an extract oil 25 having a viscosity index of 65 to 95 and a pour point of - 10 to + 20‹ F.
