Abstract
539,191. Lubricants. OCON, E. A. Feb. 24, 1940, No. 3488. [Class 91] A lubricating oil stock which has been deasphaltized and de-waxed is extracted with a solvent, which removes the cyclic and unsaturated constituents, namely liquid sulphur dioxide, aniline, nitrobenzene, halogen hydrocarbons or phenol, leaving a more viscous paraffinic raffinate and the extract, after removal of the solvent, is treated with a second solvent: namely an organic liquid boiling below 400‹F, such as carbon tetrachloride, an alcohol having from four to eight carbon atoms or an ester thereof together with an auxiliary solvent comprising an aliphatic hydrocarbon fraction boiling between 400 and 650‹C. Anthracene, benzene, turpentine and acetone may also be present in the solvent used to extract the cyclic and unsaturated constituents in the first extraction process. A product suitable for use as an auxiliary solvent in the second extraction process may be obtained from the wax obtained in the dewaxing step by subjecting it to a slow heat treatment at 800-900‹F. at pressures of 5-20 atmospheres pressure. The cracking process may be effected in the presence of a de-hydrating catalyst and hydrogen. The lubricants obtained in the second extraction process may be added to the raffinate of the first extraction, or may first be subjected to a condensation process of the Friedel-Craft type. Naphthene base oils, asphalt base oils, paraffin base oils, especially fractions boiling above 700‹F., are suitable for treatment, and for the removal of asphaltic and resinous material from crude oils, hydrogenation, filtration through clay, asphalt precipitation and treatment with an asphalt absorbent solvent may be used. For solvent extraction of asphalt, liquid sulphur dioxide, aluminium chloride and aniline saturated with water are mentioned. A butane-propane fraction or ethylenedichloride is used as de-waxing agent. In the production of an auxiliary solvent from the wax, the latter is passed with steam and oxygen over pumice impregnated with phosphoric acid. A halogenating -de-halogenating process may also be used or chlorine may be passed into the wax during the cracking process and the resulting vapour passed over aluminium or zinc.
