Abstract
Improved lubricating oils are obtained by enriching in hydrogen lubricating oils of low viscosity which may contain paraffin waxes, cracking the enriched oils, and condensing the cracked products by means of condensing and/or polymerizing agents such as chlorides of aluminium, zinc, iron, boron and phosphorus, activated aluminium sodium, zinc dust, &c. The oils are enriched with hydrogen by treatment with hydrogen at temperatures about 390-430 DEG C., preferably in presence of catalysts of the sixth group. Alternatively the oils may be separated into fractions rich and poor in hydrogen by differentiating solvents, e.g sulphur dioxide, phenol, aniline, &c., and the fraction poor in hydrogen then hydrogenated. The cracking stage is carried out at about 400-600 DEG C., preferably in the presence of catalysts, and may be effected in several stages. The condensation reaction is carried out at about 150 DEG C., preferably in presence of substances of large surface area, e.g. Florida earth, bleaching earth, active silica, &c. Mineral oils cracking and destructive hydrogenation products may be added. Crude paraffin wax containing liquid constituents is treated with phenol at 80-90 DEG C. and the products not soluble in the phenol are distilled under vacuum. The distillate is cracked several times at 490-520 DEG C., the constituents boiling below 300 DEG C. formed in each stage being removed and collected. These constituents are then polymerized in presence of aluminium chloride at 30-100 DEG C. The liquid polymerization products after removal of sludge are distilled and after removal of lighter constituents a lubricating oil is obtained having a viscosity of 2,4 DEG Engler at 99 DEG C. Specifications 141,753 and 299,086, [both in Class 91, Oils &c.], are referred to.
