Mineral and tar oils, extracting and purifying. -Mineral oils or their fractions are purified or fractionated by treatment with liquid carbon dioxide. In examples 5 lb. of crude paraffin oil, of spindle oil, and of motor lubricating oil are each treated with 25 lb. of liquid carbon dioxide in a steel bottle, the solution separated, and the dioxide vaporized. The dioxide may be reliquefied and returned to a circulating system.
