Abstract

292,932. Hofmann. F., and Stegemann, W. June 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Mineral o,ils, purifying.-Petroleums are refined by treatment with gaseous or liquid hydrofluoric acid, with or without the addition of metal halides, and optionally at increased temperature or pressure or both. Examples are given of the treatment of petroleum fractions with 1, 2, 4 and 8 per cent of hydrofluoric acid at various temperatures and for varying periods. Boron fluoride is added in one case. When working at higher temperatures, increased pressures are desirable to counteract dissociation of the hydrofluoric acid. Thick oils are preferably treated at higher temperatures or dissolved in a light oil.
