Abstract

336,515. Howes, D. A., Scott, R., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. July 22, 1929. Mineral and tar oils, purifying etc.; liquid fuel. -Kerosene and light hydrocarbons obtained by destructive hydrogenation, cracking, or straight distillation, are distilled at a temperature not exceeding 300‹ C. in presence of gaseous ammonia and absence of mineral acids, whereby the colour and the tendency to colour and to form gum are improved. For example, oil B.P. 30-300‹ C. obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of coal is distilled in a current of ammonia; colourless fractions, petrol 30-190‹ C., and kerosene 190-300‹ C. are obtained, each containing a little ammonia which may be removed by washing with water but is preferably left in. The undissolved ammonia separates in the condenser and is recirculated to the still. According to the Provisional Specification the hydrocarbon is treated with ammonia, preferably in the gaseous phase, at 300‹ C. or below. The gas may be bubbled through the liquid hydrocarbon or be supplied above the surface.
