Abstract

Heavy hydrocarbon oils such as petroleum residue fuel oil, shale oil, peat oil &c. are treated to yield liquids analogous to petroleum or naphtha and a gas suitable for lighting or heating purposes. The oils are vaporized or decomposed and the vapours are passed over oxide of cerium and reduced copper at a temperature of 450-600 DEG C. and are simultaneously or separately subjected to the action of oxide of thorium and reduced nickel at the same temperature. The vapours are cooled to 30 DEG C. by passage through a condenser to separate a hydrocarbon liquid. The remaining vapours are subjected to the action of oxide of iron and reduced nickel heated to 200 DEG C. and are cooled to 15 DEG C. to separate a further quantity of hydrocarbon liquid. The uncondensed vapours are subjected to the action of oxide of iron and reduced iron at 250-300 DEG C. and are cooled to 10 DEG C. to separate liquid. The uncondensed gas is suitable for lighting or heating purposes.
