Mineral and tar oils, purifying; paraffin waxextracting.-In the refining of lubricating and other oils containing paraffin by means of liquid sulphur dioxide, the separated upper layer while still saturated with dioxide and at a low temperature is filtered from the congealed paraffin, By varying the temperature of treatment and filtration oils of varying congealing points &c. can be obtained. When the initial oil contains aromatic, unsaturated, or other bodies extracted by the dioxide, the extract may be added to the deparaffined oil. Filtration may be effected under pressure of the dioxide vapour or produced by a pump. Prior proposals to melt out the separated solid paraffin, or to conduct the complete process at atmospheric temperature are referred to.
