Abstract
Mineral oils boiling in the lubricating oil range (500 DEG -1000 DEG F.) are treated to improve their oxidation stability by contacting the oil with an alkoxide formed from sodium and/or potassium and an alcohol having 3-10 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic secondary and tertiary alcohols, contacting the treated oil with carbon dioxide in amount in molar excess of the metal combined with oil components, and separating metal-containing material from the treated oil. The alkoxide may be formed in situ by adding the metal and alcohol separately to the oil, in which case excess metal may be recovered and reused, or it may be preformed. The process may be carried out at 50 DEG -500 DEG F. for the alkoxide treatment, and -20 DEG to 500 DEG F. for the CO2 treatment. The oil may be treated with sulphuric acid and adsorptive clay either before or after the alkoxide-carbon dioxide treatment. Petroleum waxes may also be treated. It is believed that the treatment removes unstable nitrogen-containing components.
