Abstract

Fatty oil is recovered from the effluent cooling liquid, containing a fatty rolling oil and water, that has been used in the cold rolling of steel strip, by separating the sludge (which contains the oil emulsified with water and contaminated with impurities, including metallic iron), adding mineral acid to the sludge maintaining the mixture at an elevated temperature until the emulsion is broken and a water-and oil-insoluble precipitate is formed and then separating the oil. The mineral acid reacts with the metallic iron forming nascent hydrogen, which reduces the oil-soluble or colloidal ferric-compounds, present as impurities, to oil-insoluble ferrous compounds. The fatty oil may be palm oil, other natural fatty oil, animal fat or an artificially compounded fatty oil mixture such as a blend of palm oil and wool fat, while the mineral acid may be sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or a mixture of sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. The sludge deteriorates rapidly after separation from the effluent cooling water, so that the oil must be recovered promptly from the sludge. However, deterioration of the sludge can be inhibited by mixing 1-2 per cent by weight of mineral acid with it, or by extracting it with a fat solvent (e.g. a petroleum fraction of boiling range 100 -130 DEG C.) to remove the metallic iron. The sludge may then be stored before carrying out the recovery process according to the invention, but if the iron has been removed it must be restored when the recovery process is carried out, or the inhibited sludge must be blended with fresh sludge. The recovered oil may be treated with fullers earth, active carbon or silica-gel to improve its colour and odour. Apparatus for carrying out the process of the invention is described.
