Abstract

Petroleum oil having constituents boiling above 950 DEG F. is freed of metallic contaminants by contacting the oil with HF of at least 50% concentration, thereby precipitating the contaminants as an insoluble mass, and separating HF from the precipitate and oil prior to withdrawing the oil, for example by flashing. The removed HF may be recycled. The precipitated contaminants may thereafter be removed from the oil, for example by water-washing. The resulting oil may be de-asphalted with a hydrocarbon of 3-8 carbon atoms, and then catalytically cracked.
