Abstract
1,175,028. Refining hydrocarbon oils. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 7 Aug., 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 37712/68. Heading C5E. A process for the removal of asphaltenes and resins from a residual petroleum fraction comprises treating the fraction with a precipitating agent for asphaltenes, the precipitating agent being at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon having 5 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule, separating the precipitated asphaltenes, heating the resulting substantially asphaltene-free mixture of oil and precipitating agent until a precipitate is formed and separating off this second precipitate. The precipitating agent may be pentane, a pentane-containing mixture or a light naphtha fraction boiling between 10‹ and 150‹ C. The temperature to which the mixture of oil and precipitating agent is heated may be from 10‹ to 50‹ C. below the temperature at which the mixture passes into the critical state; in examples, temperatures of from 150‹ to 185‹ C. are used.
