Abstract

<PICT:0913730/III/1> Sulphur, and also metal and nitrogen, impurities are removed from hydrocarbon streams, especially petroleum fractions such as heavy fuel oil and residuum, by contacting the stream with a molten caesium hydroxide containing 5-30% by weight of water, based on the total reagent, at a temperature of 300 DEG -700 DEG F. The reagent may also include one or more of molten sodium, potassium or barium hydroxides, and the caesium hydroxide preferably comprises from 1 to 20 mol. per cent of the reagent. The spent reagent may be regenerated by steam hydrolysis and recycled. In the Figure, a hydrocarbon feed, for example a 950 DEG F. + kuwait residuum, passes via line 1 into purifying zone 2, where it is contacted with caesium hydroxide reagent entering via line 3. The mixture enters zone 5 where it is separated into a caesium hydroxide phase and a residuum phase. To facilitate the separation a distillate fraction such as gasoline, heavy naphtha, kerosene, heating oil or other fraction boiling below 700 DEG -800 DEG F. may be introduced via line 16. The hydrocarbon phase passes through line 15, washed with water from line 17, and separated in zone 18, from which the product is recovered via line 19. The hydroxide is regenerated in zone 8.
