Abstract
1276864 Hydrocracking; hydrorefining UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 21 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 51469/69 Heading C5E A sulphur-containing feed 1, e.g. residual oil extracted from tar sand, topped or reduced crude oil or vacuum residual, is mixed with hydrogen from line 4, heated to 260-399 C., passed through a catalytic reaction zone 8 for hydrocracking and removal of organic sulphur and nitrogen compounds at 68-272 atm. gauge and then separated at 10, at 371-427 C. and substantially the same pressure as that in the reactor 8, into a vapour stream 11 and a liquid stream 15 which contains 10-40 mole per cent of dissolved hydrogen. Part of the stream 15 is recycled to the feed 1 and the rest is passed through a thermal reaction coil 16 at 13À6-34 atm. gauge and 371-399 C. and into a fractionation column 14. The stream 11 is separated at 12, at 16-60 C. and substantially the same pressure as in the separator 10, to provide a recycle stream 4 of hydrogen and a liquid stream 13, containing butane and heavier hydrocarbons, which is introduced into the fractionation column 14. From the column 14 are obtained a stream 18 of gaseous hydrocarbons and gasoline boiling up to 204 C., a stream 19 of kerosene boiling at 204-260 C., a stream 20 boiling at 264-343 C. and a bottoms fraction 21. The bottoms fraction 21 is then separated in a vacuum flash column 22 at 20-60 mm. Hg absolute into a light vacuum gas oil 23, a heavy vacuum gas oil 24 boiling at 454-527 C., a slop wax 2 boiling at 527-621 C. and a residuum 25. The slop-wax can be in part recycled to the feed in line 1 or a portion of the slop wax and/or the heavy vacuum gas oil 24 can be recycled to the thermal coil 16.
