Abstract

<PICT:0669551/III/1> A process for the catalytic desulphurization of petroleum fractions comprises passing a crude oil or a mixture of crude oil distillates or residues to a flash chamber, passing the overhead product to an autofining zone, separating hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide and recovering one or more desulphurized fractions from the products from the autofining zone, passing some or all of the hydrogen-containing gaseous fraction, and, if desired, any or all of the desulphurized fractions to the base of the flash chamber to control the degree of vaporization achieved therein and thus to control the boiling range of the fraction to be autofined. The oil is autofined by passing over a catalyst at a temperature and pressure sufficient to convert a considerable proportion of the sulphur into hydrogen sulphide and to produce a hydrogen-rich gas mixture which is recycled to the reaction zone at a rate sufficient to maintain the necessary partial pressure of hydrogen therein (of Specifications 654,151, 663,038 and 669,536). As shown, crude oil entering at 1 is distilled in column 2 and the most volatile fractions are withdrawn at 4 and 5. The residual oil is partially vaporized in furnace 7 and is then passed to flash vessel 8. The content of high-boiling components in the vapours leaving the flash vessel 8 is controlled by reflux returned to the top of the vessel, and the vapours are passed to furnace 14 and then to the catalyst chamber 15. The vapour is cooled and passed to a separator 17, from which non-condensed gas consisting mainly of hydrogen is recycled via line 18 and compressor 19 to feed points 6 and 9 at a rate sufficient to control the temperature of the oil vapours in 15. The liquid products are distilled at 21, giving gas, which may be purified, recompressed and recycled, and desulphurized, oil, which may be also recycled via 28, 18, 6 and 9, to supply further hydrogen for the autofining process. In a modification, a liquid-phase precipitation of non-volatile asphaltic components is first effected; the de-asphalted mixture of oil and asphalt precipitant may also first be dewaxed and either the oily or the waxy components treated.
