Abstract

1276920 Hydrocracking; hydrorefining UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 22 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 51749/69 Heading C5E A sulphur-containing feed 1, e.g. residual oil extracted from tar sand, topped or reduced crude oil or vacuum residuals, is mixed with hydrogen from line 3, heated to 260-413‹ C., passed through a catalytic reactor 7 for hydrocracking and removal of organic sulphur and nitrogen compounds at 68-272 atmos. gauge and then separated at 9, at substantially the same pressure as that in the reactor 7 and, if cooled by heat exchange, at 371-413‹ C. into a vapour stream 10 and a liquid stream 12. Part of the stream 12 is recycled to the incoming feed and the rest is separated in a hot flash zone 13 at 10À2-23À8 atm.g. to produce a vapour stream 14 boiling below 343‹ C. and a liquid stream 16 containing dissolved hydrogen. The stream 16 is mixed with 1% of steam and passed through the thermal cracking coil at the effluent produced, at 466-510‹ C. and 2À6-6À8 atm.g. is cooled to 371‹ C. and separated at 19 into a vapour stream 20 and a liquid stream 24 which is then separated in a vacuum column 25 at 25-75 mm Hg. abs. to produce a light vacuum gas oil boiling from 160‹ to 399‹ C., if desired, a medium vacuum gas oil boiling from 399‹ to 527‹ C., a heavy gas oil comprising the remainder of the distillable hydrocarbons, and a residuum 28. A slop wax boiling above 527‹ C. can also be separated from the vacuum column and either in part recycled to the reactor 7 or recycled, with or without a portion of the heavy vacuum gas oil, to the thermal coil 17. The vapour stream 10 is separated at 11, at 16-60‹ C. and at substantially the same pressure as in the separator 9, to provide a recycle hydrogen stream 3 and a liquid stream 15. The liquid stream 15 and the vapour streams 14 and 20 are separated at 21 at about 4À1 atm.g. and at 16-60‹ C. into a gaseous stream 22 and a liquid stream 23 containing butane and heavier hydrocarbons. A hydrocracking catalyst used comprises 2 wt. per cent Ni and 16% Mo on a support comprising 88% Al 2 O 3 and 12% SiO 2 .
