Abstract

1276877 Hydrocracking; hydrorefining UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 22 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 51748/69 Heading C5E A sulphur containing feed 1, e.g. residual oil extracted from tar sand, topped or reduced crude oil or vacuum residuals, is mixed with hydrogen from line 3, heated to 260-399‹ C., passed through a catalytic reaction zone 7 for hydrocracking and removal of organic nitrogen and sulphur compounds at a pressure of 68- 272 atm. gauge and then through a thermal reaction coil 9. The effluent from the coil is, after cooling to below 399‹ C. by heat exchange if desired, separated at 11 into a vapour stream 19, which is further separated at 20 at 16-60‹ C. to provide a recycle stream 3 of hydrogen and a stream 21 comprising butane and heavier hydrocarbons, and a liquid stream 12. Part of the stream 12 is recycled to the fresh feed entering the heater 5, a second part is recycled to the stream 8, and the rest of the stream 12 is passed to the separator 13. The flash separation zone 13 is maintained at 399-454‹ C. and 3À4-17 atm. gauge and separates the stream 12 into a liquid phase 14 and a vapour phase 25 which is combined with the stream 24 for fractionation. The stream 14 is separated in the flash column 15 at 25-60 mm Hg absolute into a residuum 18, a light vacuum gas oil 16, a heavy vacuum gas 17 and optionally a medium vacuum gas oil and slop wax. The slop wax comprises distillable hydrocarbons boiling above 527‹ C. and is recycled, with or without a portion of the heavy vacuum gas oil, and combined with the stream 6 or the incoming fresh feed. A catalyst used in the reactor 7 contains 1À8 wt. per cent Ni and 16 wt. per cent Mo on a carrier containing 63% Al 2 O 3 and 37% SiO 2 .
