Abstract

A carbon-electrode binder is obtained by heat-treating an aromatic tar obtained from the steam cracking of hydrocarbons whereby volatile constituents are removed from the said tar and the proportion of benzene-insoluble matter in the tar is increased. The heat-treatment may be carried out at a temperature between 750 DEG and 900 DEG F., volatile material resulting from the heat-treatment being removed overhead, or the aromatic tar may be heated to a temperature between 700 DEG and 850 DEG F. under a pressure of from 50 to 1500 p.s.i.g., the volatiles thus formed being flashed off to a lower pressure of from 0 to 80 p.s.i.g. The binder may include a minor proportion of a lighter hydrocarbon whereby the softening point is adjusted to a desired value, the lighter hydrocarbon may be obtained from the volatile fraction removed during the heat-treating step.
