Abstract
A low wax content naphthenic crude oil is distilled to obtain a topped crude, which is vacuum distilled to produce (a) a petroleum pitch and (b) a gas oil. The gas oil is extracted with a selectively aromatics extracting solvent to produce (c) an aromatic-scan raffinate oil. The resulting aromatic-rich extract oil may be used as a carbon black feed-stock. Pitch (a) may have R and B softening point of at least 150 DEG F. The selective solvent may be e.g. liquid SO2, furfural, and phenol.ALSO:An asphalt composition comprises (a) a petroleum pitch and (b) an aromatic-lean gas oil. The components may both be obtained from heavy naphthenic crude oil by conventional methods. The proportion of oil (b) may be 15-35% by weight of the composition. The composition may have penetration 40-200 at 77 DEG F., and R. and B. softening point of 80-140 DEG F. Pitch (a) may have R. and B. point of at least 150 DEG F.
