Abstract

1494311 Solvent extraction of coal AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 4 Feb 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 4798/75 Heading C5E Liquid fuel is produced by heating a mixture of at least 50 parts by weight of a heavy oil of the petroleum series with 100 parts of finely divided coal at 400-450‹ C. and atmospheric pressure and thereafter separating an insoluble material, e.g. by centrifuging or filtration, from the mixture. After heating, the mixture can be mixed with a diluent prior to the separation of the insoluble material; suitable diluents are quinoline, pyridine, nitrobenzene, an oil of the coal series (e.g. anthracene oil, creosote oil or pitch oil), an aromatic-rich oil of the petroleum series or an oil produced by thermal cracking during the heating of the mixture. The heavy oil of the petroleum series with which the coal is heated is a residue produced by distillation of crude oil at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum or a tar obtained as a by-product in thermal cracking of asphalt or naphtha.
