Abstract

1474100 Solvent extraction of coal COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 24 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 48448/74 Heading C5E Aromatic components obtained by the selective extraction of a heavy petroleum fraction or residue are used as solvent oils in the solvent extraction of coal at above 350‹ C. In examples, solvent oils are produced using N-methyl pyrrolidone to extract (1) a vacuum distillate, obtained by distilling a crude oil at 350-525‹ C., (2) a vacuum bitumen residue boiling above 345‹ C. at 107 N/m.<SP>2</SP> pressure, and (3) a vacuum bitumen boiling above 350‹ C. at 5 mm. Hg (i.e. above 550‹ C. at atmospheric pressure) and derived from a North Sea crude oil. The solvents can be used as such, as make up oil, or in admixture with anthracene oil. Coal is extracted with the solvent oils and the extract, after separation of solids, is subjected to delayed coking to produce electrode coke and recycle solvent.
