Abstract

1452610 Solvent extraction of coal LUMMUS CO 6 Nov 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 51553/73 Heading C5E Insoluble material is separated from a coal liquefaction product produced from a coal feed and comprised of insoluble material and carbonaceous matter dissolved in a liquefaction solvent comprising hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative having substantially hydrocarbon chemical properties by (a) mixing the coal liquefaction product with a liquid promoter comprising hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative having substantially hydrocarbon chemical characteristics, and having a 5 vol. per cent distillation temperature of at least 250‹ F., a 95 vol. per cent distillation temperature of at least 350‹ F. and no greater than 750‹ F. and a characterization factor (K)#9À75 which is also greater than the K of the liquefaction solvent in an amount sufficient to produce a coal extract substantially free of insoluble material, (b) recovering such a coal extract, (c) separating from this extract a fraction having a 5 vol. per cent distillation temperature #250‹ F., a 95 vol. per cent distillation temperature #350‹ F. and no greater than 750‹ F. (d) hydrogenating at least a portion of this fraction to produce a liquid having a characterization factor #9À75 and greater than that of the liquefaction solvent and (e) employing this liquid as liquid promoter in step (a). The characterization factor is defined. The weight ratio of liquid promoter to coal solution may be 0À2 : 1 to 4À0 : 1. Separation may be by settling at 300-600‹ F. and 0-500 p.s.i.g., the example describing the use of a "rocking bomb" for settling.
