Abstract

687,113. Treating wood with liquids and gases. HUDSON, M. S. June 9, 1950. No. 14503/50. Class 140. In order to remove an excess of material, e.g. a preservative such as creosote, synthetic resins, waxes, asphalt, pitches, from wood impregnated therewith and minimize "bleeding" of the material on its surface, the wood is heated in a closed space, e.g. the "Rueping" cylinder disclosed in Specifications . 6844/02, 19737/04, 24451/04, [all in Class 140], and the apparatus disclosed in Specification 655,064, by introducing therein vapours of an organic solvent, e.g. low boiling fractions of creosote, coal tar and light petroleum fractions, having a boiling point, at the pressure in the closed space, not higher than will allow the heating to be carried out at a temperature below the temperature at which the wood would be damaged by heating, e.g. 240‹F. to 320‹F., said boiling point being not less than 25‹F'. to 50‹F. higher than the initial temperature of the impregnated wood, continuing introduction of the vapours until the excess material is extracted to a desired extent by condensate of the solvent continuously formed on the surface of the wood for solvent action at full strength, and drawing and recovering the condensate and extracted excess as by impressing a vacuum on the closed space.
