575,642. Extracting vegetable waxes. AFRICAN SISAL & PRODUCE CO., Ltd., WALSH, C. L., and HOAR, T. P. Feb. 25, 1944, No. 3522. [Class 91] Wax-like products are extracted from sisal and like plant flesh, after removal of the main bulk of fibre, by first drying the material and then subjecting it to extraction under refluxing conditions with an organic solvent at or just below its boiling point, the solvent being finally distilled off from the separated solution. The solvents specified comprise petroleum benzine, trichlorethylene, benzene, petroleum ether, and acetone and mixtures thereof, the solvent used governing to some extent the colour, hardness &c. of the wax-like products obtained. Examples are given of the extraction using petroleum benzine alone; petroleum ether alone, followed by re-extraction of the remaining plant flesh material with a mixture of petroleum ether and acetone; or re-extraction of either of these last residues with trichlorethylene; and using trichlorethylene alone on the original material. The waxlike products may be modified, probably polymerised, by heating above 100‹C.
