Abstract

Steroids are obtained by extracting resin or wood of species commiphora with a suitable non-polar or weakly polar solvent, followed by chromatography and crystallisation. Pref. the extract is saponified and the neutral portion subjected to chromatography. The resin or wood may be steam distilled to remove the essential oil, and the residue then solvent extracted, or the extract may be steam distilled before saponillation and/or chromatography. Products are easily convertible to other steroids having androgenic and oestrogenic activity.
