Abstract

Wool grease is saponified with caustic alkali in a co-solvent mixture of isopropanol and water. Wool wax alcohols are extracted from the saponified mixture using hexane or heptane as solvent and the extract is washed first with dilute KOH and then with water. Extraction and washing are best achieved in a continuous countercurrent rotary disc extraction column. The solvent is evaporated from the purified extract to recover the wool wax alcohols. The raffinate is acidified and stripped free of the solvent fraction in a continuous stripper still to recover fatty acids which are water-washed and dried.
