Abstract

Cashew nut shell liquid and cashew kernel oil are separated from the whole nuts by subjecting the comminuted cashew nuts to extraction with a specific solvent for either the shell liquid or the kernel oil. The selective solvents specified for the cashew nut shell liquid comprise methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or any combination of these three alcohols; and for the cashew kernel oil comprises liquid propane. The separation is preferably effected on the mixed liquid obtained by heat-pressing the comminuted cashew nuts or alternatively on the solution obtained by extracting the comminuted mass with a solvent which dissolves both the shell liquid and the kernel oil, either before or after the removal of this solvent from the solution. The specified solvents common to both the shell liquid and the kernel oil comprise petroleum spirits, naphtha, textile spirits, acetone, propyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, or a higher alcohol. In the first method, the expressed liquid containing some finely-divided solid matter is agitated with a solvent selective for the shell liquid and then allowed to stand and separate into two layers, a solution of the shell liquid in the solvent and a pasty layer of the finely-divided solid in the kernel oil. The two layers are separated and the pasty mass treated with one of the common solvents above, such as naphtha, which dissolves out the kernel oil and leaves a solid nitrogenous residue. The solvents are distilled off from the respective solutions leaving the cashew nut shell liquid and cashew kernel oil in each case. The deoiled p cake from the pressing operation may be treated with one of the common solvents above to remove any residual shell liquid and kernel oil. After removal of solvent from the resulting solution, the liquid may be separated into the shell liquid and kernel oil as before. In the alternative method, the solvent solution containing both the shell liquid and kernel oil with a small amount of solid matter is separated into the shell liquid and kernel oil as in the first method, before or after the removal of the common solvent.
