Abstract

<PICT:0979772/C4-C5/1> The closed point of crude oils and residual oil fractions obtained therefrom is reduced by selectively removing wax which causes high closed points therein, in a process which comprises heating the oil to a temperature sufficiently high, for example 160-220 DEG F., to melt all of the wax therein and to disperse the asphaltenes and resins present, cooling the heated oil to cause the wax to precipitate and form large agglomerates, and centrifuging, for example at 35-55 DEG F., to separate a dense wax phase and to recover a crude oil of substantially lower closed point, in which the rate of cooling from just above the closed point of the crude oil to the temperature of centrifuging is from 0.5 DEG to 2 DEG F. per minute. Fig. 3 illustrates diagrammatically a process according to the invention. The cooling to just above the closed point may be shock cooling. The centrifuge may exert a force of 7000-10,000 gees, and the residence time may be for a period of a few seconds to 5 minutes. The crude oil may contain up to 12% wax.
