Abstract

Visbroken residual petroleum stocks are deasphalted by mixing the stock with a deasphalting solvent, preferably an aliphatic hydrocarbon of 5-18 carbon atoms, for example heptane, in an amount sufficient to cause some, but incomplete, precipitation of asphaltic material, heating the mixture to an elevated temperature which is below the softening point of the asphaltic material and below the boiling point of the deasphalting solvent under the conditions of use, preferably above 82 DEG C., and 28 DEG -42 DEG C. below the softening point, adding additional deasphalting solvent to the heated mixture, said additional solvent being at a lower temperature than the mixture, whereby the mixture is quenched to a lower temperature, preferably below 66 DEG C., and separating the precipitated asphaltic material from the hydrocarbon components of the residual fraction, for example by settling, removal, and filtration.
