Abstract

Deteriorated and contaminative components of lubricating oil are removed by adding to the oil a less than 20% aqueous solution of caustic alkali, thereby to increase the particle size of the unwanted components by cohesion, and thereafter separating these components from the oil. The process may be effected continuously, for example in a lubricating system, such as in a diesel engine, where a side-stream is tapped from the lubricating system, regenerated, and returned to the system.
