Abstract
The acidity of used marine diesel engine lubricating oil is reduced by treating the oil with ammonia. The treatment may be effected by injecting ammonia gas into the oil, by spraying the oil into an atmosphere of ammonia gas or by washing the oil with a dilute aqueous solution of ammonia. The treatment may be incorporated into the continuous process wherein, during the operation of the engine, used crankcase oil from the engine passes to a sump and is returned to the engine after passage through a filter and a cooler, a proportion of the circulating oil being subjected to a cleansing operation comprising water-washing followed by centrifuging. The treatment with ammonia may render the water-washing step unnecessary. According to the Provisional Specification, the ammonia treatment may be applied to the circulating crankcase oils of engines other than marine diesel engines.
