Abstract

Prior to plating or painting, the surface of steel, Al and Cu is freed from dirt, oil and partic. oxides by dipping the metal into a 20-80 wt.% soln. of an organo-metallic cpd. in a hydrocarbon solvent which has a high affinity to O. The organo-metallic cpd. is composed of only metal, C and H. The thus treated metal may subsequently be plated by thermal dissocn. in a bath contg. a metal organyl such as a metal alkyl or pref. an Al alkyl such as AlEt3 or a metal alkyl hydride such as diethyl Al hydride. The same soln. may serve as plating bath.
