Abstract

1368014 Hot-dip galvanizing H BUSCHJENSEN 14 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971 17 Sept 1971 23 March 1972] 37825/72 Heading C7F Surfaces of a ferrous object to be galvanized are treated with an aqueous pre-treatment liquid, and thereafter, whilst said object is still covered therewith, the object is passed through a bath of a liquid water-displacing agent able to form a continuous film on ferrous metal, and thereafter the object is hot-dip galvanized, and said agent thereby removed. The process may be continuous, and the pre-treatment liquid an aqueous pickling and/or flux bath; the waterdisplacing agent is typically an organic solvent solution of a fluid silicone, paraffin and/or mineral oil and may either be in a separate bath following the pre-treatment bath or may float on top of all or a part of the pre-treatment bath, e.g. to a depth of 8-30cm., a suitable dam or baffle being provided in the latter case. The viscosity of the agent may be 2-30 centistokes, and the agent is chosen such that the film thereof on the object evaporates or decomposes at the temperature of the hot-dip bath.
